How Blogging will Boost your Career What better way to beam out your personal brand than to start a blog? More and more people are setting up blogs and the trend is not going to wane. Some career experts argue a blog is a prerequisite for a successful career, I am not fully convinced of that but I would certainly recommend you look into it. Blogging is simple, quick and most often completely free. This post will give you the reasons why and ways how to get going. Why should I blog? Just like you should work on personal branding right now, a blog will set you up nicely for any eventualities in your career. This is your chance to tell the world what you do and how you do it. You might already have online profiles on LinkedIn and other platforms, you may be featured on your company’s website and think this is enough. That is a great start but what you haven’t got there is full control of your own digital footprint. By having your own blog, you decide exactly what goes up and how it looks. It is your corner of cyberspace and your blog is your castle. Your blog will increase your online presence and will be how you get found on search engines like Google. Imagine how beneficial it would be when a recruiter or hiring manager runs a search on you and sees your blog which clearly demonstrates your knowledge in a particular field. Another great reason to blog is that whatever topic you choose to write about, you’ll find that you soon become an expert in the field. You have to come up with new content and you will have do a fair amount of research. Whilst doing this you will read and learn more about your subject out of necessity. Your blog will basically force you to learn (and write) more and in the process this will aid your own personal development. Furthermore, blogging will lead to opportunities that you could never conceive. As your blog is out on the web, you will become part of an online community of like minded people. This network can lead to all kinds of exciting new ventures for your career. I know people who have been ‘discovered’ from their hobby blog and landed good jobs thanks to their writing. What to write about? You can write about anything but if you want more readers than your mom, you best pick a topic that is interesting to the reader. Think to yourself, what is the purpose of my blog? What will readers actually enjoy and what will help them solve problems in their daily life? You can write about your hobby or work for instance, something that you want to share information about. A good piece of advice is to write about something you know a lot about as you can then easily come up with new content. What to name the blog? When you have decided what to write about, you’ll want to pick a name that corresponds nicely to your content, giving potential readers a nice little heads up. Lots of names are taken so you will have to use your imagination. You can also opt for naming it after yourself but this says very little about your blog unless you are famous and your name can pull the crowds. Consistency This can be the hard part. If you want people to come back to your blog, you’ll have to keep churning out valuable content. The key here is consistency, whether you write a post once a week or once a day, your readers should know what to expect and have a reason to return. What technology to use? I am not going to get techie on you but I can recommend WordPress as an excellent blogging platform for anyone with some technical understanding. WordPress is a bit like Firefox or even an iPhone in that it has lots of add on applications and plugins, allowing you to change things round to your liking. If you want the simplest form of a blog, go for Google’s Blogger application, which will have you up and writing in less than two minutes. There are a few limitations with Blogger but if you’re an absolute novice it’s the way forward. These applications are both free by the way. You will also probably want to get your own domain, which will only cost you about $10 from domain registrars such as GoDaddy. Achieving success There is no magic formula, silver bullet or quick fix to making your blog a success. I am not a grand master of the craft myself and I can only say that hard work and consistency is what has paid off for me so far. Budgeting for Your Next Trip Don’t Forget These 6 Hidden Travel Costs You’ve paid for the plane tickets, booked the hotel, and saved up to pay for food and entertainment. What’s left to think about now? It turns out there’s quite a bit that should be on your list as you budget for your next trip. Otherwise, unexpected expenses could crop up and take away from all the fun stuff you’ve planned for your next getaway. Here are six of the most commonly overlooked and   hidden travel costs that come with traveling. Factor them in and travel comfortably on this trip and all the ones to come. Pet Care Some pets can fend for themselves for a few days. Others can travel with you if you’re driving to a pet-friendly destination. Most of the time, though, you’ll leave your pets behind when you fly around the country and world. Don’t forget to factor in just how much pet care will cost you. You can always find a deal, of course, so start researching early. Find a respected boarding facility or interview pet-sitters to find the place or person who’s budget-friendly and trustworthy. Asking friends and family who they use is a great place to start, since you don’t want to leave man’s best friend with just anyone. Airline Fees Some airlines will entice you to buy their tickets with a lower overall fare. Once you’re roped in, though, you’ll find out that everything costs more â€"  from the bags you bring on board to the snacks you’re served when flying. Before buying your ticket, look into what your chosen airline charges to check or carry your luggage with you. This is an especially good practice if you’re flying an unfamiliar airline while you’re overseas. Lots of budget airlines will charge you if you bring more than one bag â€" yes, including a purse â€"  with you to board. Plus, there might be additional charges if you haven’t printed your boarding pass before arriving at the airport. Always read the fine print! Tips A domestic vacation won’t throw you for a loop â€"  you already know how to tip in restaurants, bars and taxis. You know to give your massage therapist or hairstylist or tour guide a little something extra at the end of your session, too. Of course, you also want to give hotel staffers a monetary thank you. Everyone from bellboys to cleaning staff to concierge experts should earn a few dollars for their services. Doorman, bell staff and shuttle drivers should receive $1-2 per bag, depending on luggage size. Housekeeping should be tipped $1-5 per day, to be received daily, and the valet can be tipped with a daily drop-off or pick-up in the amount of $4-5. In other countries, though, the lines become blurred. What are you expected to tack onto your bill? Brush up on cultural norms before taking off so you know just what to do in all situations in which you might have to tip. Airport or Station Transfers You know how you’re getting from your home to the city or town you’re traveling to. Did you also consider how you will get from the airport or bus or train station to the place where you’re staying? This is always something to factor in â€"  taxis can cost you a pretty penny and, if there’s no other way to travel to and from your hotel, you’ll have to pay the fee twice. Many places have more budget-friendly options, though. For example, there is usually an airport bus that will take you to the city center. You can also transfer from your regional train to a city-based metro that can drop you off closer to your final destination â€"  city buses do that, too. If you must travel by taxi, try traveling with a ride-sharing service or splitting the costs with your fellow travelers, so it doesn’t take as much of a toll on your budget. Card Fees Card fees generally apply to international travel, although withdrawing from a different domestic ATM could incur charges, too. You’ve saved up for your impending vacation, but you might not have considered how much it’ll cost you to take out money once you arrive. Some banks will charge you to use their ATMs. On top of that, your home bank could charge you for an international transaction. This could add up to more than $10 tacked onto the amount of cash you take out. Either figure out a cheaper option or take out larger sums of money at first so you can avoid multiple fees. Check into your credit card’s fees, too. Some add fees to international charges. A 3 percent upcharge on the total cost of each transaction can add up quickly, so call them before you go to find out what, if any, fees will apply. If your card isn’t travel-friendly, try swapping it for one that’s widely accepted and transaction fee-free. Fortunately, there are plenty of well-regarded travel credit cards out there. Roaming or Data Charges Again, this applies more to international travel, but data and roaming charges can hit once you’re home. You might find yourself a little bit broke after trekking around the globe, and you don’t want that to happen. Find out how much you’ll be charged to use your phone overseas. Ask your cellular provider if there’s a budget-friendly international plan so you can still use your phone sporadically while you’re traveling. Otherwise, pop it into airplane mode and only use it when you have Wi-Fi. If you need apps to help you navigate, think about buying a SIM card when you arrive at your destination. A prepaid one is often pretty cheap, and it will only be a small portion of your budget in comparison to data and roaming charges. Get Going! Being positive helps in this job - and the next - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This is the kind of email I reeeeeeeally like getting: First of all: Thank you so much for all of your intelligent and inspiring advice about work. I was working at a retail job and not loving it. In fact, I will admit, I hated for a while and I was the complainer that you have written about. I read your articles about having a good attitude at work and about being a constructive complainer instead of just a big pain. I realized that I needed to look at the positives about my work and quit kvetching. I liked my co-workers and most of the time the job was pleasant. It really helped to have some perspective on a healthy work environment. The quality of my work improved and I enjoyed work more. When I decided to move to another state I began the process of giving notice. Since I was happier about work and the people I worked with, I was leaving the job on a very positive note. Then the unexpected happened. I found out about a job opportunity where I was moving that was directly connected to my current employer. I wasnt sure how to make the necessary connections at first, but I started talking to the people I knew at my work and sure enough people were happy to help. After several phone calls and emails, I was talking to the owner of the company that I wanted to work for. And I am going to have an interview with him soon! He seems to have your philosophy about work: He also values liking your job over money and he believes in a positive, respectful work environment so employees feel valued. During our initial phone interview he asked me: Which was more important to me: the job or the money. As I said in a recent post to you, it was easy to answer: the job. I never expected that a retail job would lead to meeting the owner of a company. Literally, it was all due to treating people well and having a good attitude. Im convinced. I was pleasantly surprised by the lengths people will go when they like you and like the way that you work. The whole experience taught me not to take a little job for granted, or to take the people you work with for granted. Everything counts. Thank you for everything! Moving up the chain of command within your current company could be one of the hardest things to do. Why? The senior managers already see you in your current role, performing your day-to-day responsibilities. They do not physically see you in that higher level role, successfully managing those higher-level, higher risk programs and departments. And its not a given that if youre successful in your current position that youll be successful at a higher level position. So how do you prove that you can do the job before you get the job? Go after those projects that are valued by company leaders where you can flex your muscles, showcase your strengths, and demonstrate that youre the right person for the job. When an opportunity presents itself, youll need to jump in and go for it! Finally, build your visibility and credibility with Sr. Leaders. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but in order to be seen by Sr. Leaders youll need to step into the spotlight. Look for opportunities to share your teams wins and the challenges youve broken through at meetings, webinars, forums and internal conferences. Build your credibility by focusing on results including numbers and percentages. When you build your credibility with Sr. Leaders, your setting yourself (and your career) up for success.
